Development
Sensilist has been researched and developed by PhD Taran Skjerdal and colleagues at the Veterinary Institute. Skjerdal is a large capacity in food safety in an international context and has a high level of expertise Listeria in food. She is a member of the Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food and the Environment, leader of the professional group for hygiene and infectious substances and a member of the European reference function for Listeria (EURL, as the authorities' highest advisory committee) together with experts from other EU / EEA countries
The method is produced, developed and tested in collaboration with various players in food production, hygiene and food safety, who participated as partners in the commercialization project, including MOWI, Sinkaberg Hansen, Nordlaks, Nortura, Orkla and Aquatiq, as well as environments with design expertise.
Patent
The method has been patented and so far a patent has been granted in Norway. The application has been continued through PCT and is being sought through the European Patent Organization (EPO) and in the USA, Canada, Chile, Brazil, India, China, Australia, Singapore and South Africa.
Experience and competence
Our employees have specialist expertise in this area and contribute professional expertise and knowledge in everyday life to help our customers solve the challenges that may arise in relation to Listeria.
Listeria
ListeriaThe bacterium is the great fear for all food producers, it is a soil bacterium that is found everywhere in the environment around us and which constantly "knocks on the door". The consequences of an outbreak of listeriosis are very serious. Listeriosis in young children and people with weakened immune systems can cause serious illness and death, in addition to serious birth defects and miscarriages in pregnant women. Among the foodborne pathogenic bacteria provide Listeria absolutely highest mortality at outbreak. Better overview and control of the listeria bacterium in food and the production environment is important for food safety. Better control also has a major effect on food waste, in addition to reduced costs related to handling outbreaks and the consequences of this, in the producer and supply chain and in the health care system.
Quick method
Sensilist is the first rapid method for precise detection of Listeria monocytogenes in food and food production environment. The method is 200 x more sensitive than current methods and with the possibility of direct quantification. This means that compared to today's "state of the art" solutions with much greater accuracy one can estimate the food's actual content of listeria bacteria at the food's expiration date based on analyzes done on the food's production date and with greater precision trace the presence of the listeria bacterium in a production environment and the effect of control measures. The method takes place in a closed system and in contrast to current "state of the art" solutions, advanced laboratory equipment or highly qualified personnel are not required. This makes it possible to analyze locally at the production site rather than in a high-tech laboratory and thereby save time and costs on the analysis compared to current solutions.
